Sven grew up in the Bavarian town of Hof. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cologne in Germany and also concurrently studied Sports Science at the Deutsche Sporthochschule in Cologne. After completion of Medical School he spent his early career in the UK before moving to Perth/Western Australia.
The completion of the Basic and Advanced Orthopaedic Surgery Training in Perth meant he could continue pursuing his interest in sports injuries, in particular shoulder surgery and knee surgery. Working in all the major teaching hospitals in Western Australia has given him a broad foundation as an Orthopaedic Surgeon with extensive experience in general Orthopaedic trauma and all other joint and musculoskeletal conditions.
After admission to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010 he returned to Europe where he followed his desire to learn more about arthroscopic procedures in shoulder surgery and knee surgery. Sven worked alongside with some of the most well-known experts in their respective fields in shoulder surgery and knee surgery. He spent 6 months working with Prof. A. Imhoff in Munich at the largest dedicated Sports Orthopaedic Surgery unit in Germany where he gained invaluable skills and knowledge in cutting edge knee surgery and shoulder surgery techniques for sports injuries. After this fellowship he was able to work with two of the most innovative and respected shoulder surgeons for one year – Dr. Laurent Lafosse and his partner Dr. Bruno Toussaint at the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy/France. Training in Europe has allowed Sven to gain specific skills and expertise in shoulder surgery learning various arthroscopic and open procedures and treatments that have not been commonly utilised in Australia.
After his return to Perth in 2011 he founded Perth Shoulder Clinic with Dr. Grant Booth where he strives to make this the premier center for all shoulder-related problems in WA. He has been involved in looking after shoulder injuries of the professional Super Rugby team, Western Force since 2011 as well as WAFL league teams. Sven consults and operates at Bethesda Hospital, Hollywood Hospital and Joondalup Health Campus.
Sven has been invited to speak at national and international conferences for shoulder surgery where he served as a faculty member together with leading shoulder surgeons from APAC, Europe and the USA. He continues to be involved with teaching of Orthopaedic Surgeons, trainees and allied health professionals locally and nationally. Sven has also published in the peer-reviewed literature. He is a fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the Royal Australasian College Of Surgeons (RACS) and an international affiliate member of the American Association Of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
In May 2017 he became the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in Western Australia to implant a shoulder replacement with the help of computer-aided navigation tools. He has been involved in development and teaching the new technique.
